Tamiya Porsche 959, Review of a Classic

Tamiya Porsche 959

We are going to look at one of Tamiya’s most classic, and iconic RC cars. Item # 58059, the Porsche 959, released on October 29, 1986. And has not been re-released since. Because it was only produced once in 1986 it has become a very rare and sought after car. While writing this article I searched the internet for one. On Ebay I found a few of the Porsche 959’s claiming to be original. Some were assembled, some were in pieces. The prices ranged from $800.00 to $1100.00 USD.

The Tamiya Porsche 959 is an iconic model car kit. It is widely regarded as one of the most technologically advanced RC models of its time and has earned a significant following among collectors and RC enthusiasts.

One of the key features of the Tamiya Porsche 959 is its ultra-detailed Lexan body. Tamiya employed a new technique, blow molding, to create the body, which includes inward curving front, back, and sides that would not have been possible with traditional molding methods. The Lexan is also thinner than most RC bodies and includes small ABS plastic details for the rear wing, roof-mounted rear lights, and side mirrors. The livery of Rothmans (Tobacco) colors and the detailed interior make for a stunning-looking model. Complete with driver, and navigator.

The chassis of the Tamiya Porsche 959 is equally impressive. The model is made in 1/12 scale, which makes the chassis both compact and visually appealing. Double wishbone suspension helps keep this 4wd car under control. The dampers are unique to the 959 and feature aluminum bodies with oil reservoirs made of plastic tubing on top. The monocoque frame is constructed from three main parts, with front and rear gearboxes connected by a center section for the gears and motor. The motor used in the Tamiya Porsche 959 is the iconic RX 540VZ Technigold. This was the first model to be equipped with this motor as standard. The kit also includes miniature bulbs for the front lights, which are connected to the main battery through the MSC.

While the Tamiya Porsche 959 was a significant innovation, it faced some durability challenges due to its intricate details and small size. The lower arms, particularly in the front, were prone to breakage, which has made finding original parts in good condition a challenge for restorers.   Today, the Tamiya Porsche 959 remains a highly sought-after model for collectors and enthusiasts alike. While many have been lost or damaged over the years, those that remain in good condition are considered valuable and are often the centerpiece of RC collections. Many enthusiasts also continue to modify and upgrade the model, adding new features and improvements to further enhance its performance and realism.  Overall, the Tamiya Porsche 959 remains a highly collectible model with a significant following among RC enthusiasts. Its blend of advanced technology, detailed craftsmanship, and iconic design make it a true classic in the world of RC.

In conclusion, the Tamiya Porsche 959 is not only a remarkable RC model but also a symbol of innovation and excellence in RC. Its advanced features, attention to detail, and iconic design have made it a classic that continues to inspire and captivate enthusiasts to this day.
