A Classic RC Truck: Tamiya Blackfoot

For those who grew up in the 1980’s and 1990’s, the Tamiya Blackfoot truck was a staple of the RC off-road world. With its rugged design, powerful motor, and customizable parts, this truck was a favorite of hobbyists and enthusiasts alike. In terms of performance, it cannot compare to the beasts of today, but still remains a very popular truck for the nostalgic RCer. Whether it becomes a shelf queen, or it is taken out for the occasional blast through the dirt. I still enjoy driving mine whenever I can.

The Blackfoot was first released on October 8, 1986. There have been many re-releases since then including different variations. The 1/10 scale model currently available is the 2016 release of the Blackfoot item# 58633-A. The F-150 body rides high on the space frame chassis. A version of the Frog’s ORV chassis. Double wishbone suspension in the front with a trailing arm rear setup. The rear drive shafts for this 2wd truck have rubber boots on them to protect them from dirt, and dust. The gearbox is also sealed. To power this truck Tamiya includes a brushed 540 motor, with a Hobbywing THW 1060 ESC (electronic speed control). You can use NiMH (nickel metal hydride), or 2s-3s Lipo (lithium polymer) batteries. At the time I am writing this article the Blackfoot can be purchased at Horizon hobby, or tower hobbies for $203.00 USD.

The Blackfoot is a kit and will require assembly, which in my opinion is half the fun. If you plan to drive this truck, and why wouldn't you. You will need some items that don't come with it. A 2-channel radio transmitter, a receiver to pair with your transmitter, a steering servo, and batteries for the car and radio. You will also want to get some paint for the finishing touches, as the body is not painted. This is when the artist can come out in you. Personally, as you can see in my pictures, I stuck to the box art. A classic look for me.

The Blackfoot was my first monster truck back in the late 1980’s. I traded my skateboard for it (Sims Jeff Phillips). I am not sure what happened to that one over 30 years ago, but I now have the 2016 re-release which I was given by my buddy Sal back in 2020. The Tamiya Blackfoot is a classic truck that stood the test of time, with a few manufacturer upgrades from Tamiya along the way. Its rugged design, and very customizable features make it a favorite for hobbyists still to this day. I smile whenever I walk by it on my shelf, where it doesn't stay for long when I see it. I must take it down for a run.
