Traxxas TRX-4M Review

Traxas has released a smaller scale version of their popular 1/10 scale TRX-4 RC crawler. A 1/18 scale TRX-4M. Despite the size difference it does not skimp on looks or performance. With smaller crawlers gaining in popularity, this offering from Traxxas should do well.

The Traxxas TRX-4M comes RTR (ready to run) with everything you need except the batteries for the transmitter. You have the option of 2 fully licensed bodies. The Ford Bronco is in your choice of red, white, blue, or black. The Land Rover Defender comes in red, blue, silver, or green. Personally, I prefer the green Land Rover. The body is ABS, injection molded with the color infused during the injection, so it won't chip or flake. The contrasting black roof with roof rack, along with black flared out wheel wells give these trucks an even more rugged look. There are no visible body clips. The body has quick release clips hidden under the body in the front and rear. The chassis is a deep c channel design with a steel ladder frame. It has nylon composite crossmembers to add some rigidity.

Mounted toward the front is the brushed Titan motor. There is no need for adjustments because the gear mesh is fixed. The electronics according to Traxxas are fully waterproof. So, you can have fun driving the TRX-4M in all types of weather and terrains. To tackle those terrains, there are 3 driving modes:

1)    Sport Mode - Forward / Brake / Reverse

2)    Trail Mode - Forward / Brake / Reverse / With trail-tuned drag brake in neutral

3)    Crawl Mode - Forward / Instant reverse - no neutral with 100% hill holding brake.

Making sure the power gets from the Titan motor to the wheels, Traxxas uses heavy duty CV driveshafts, solid steel axles, with full time 4wd that is shaft driven. For the suspension the TRX-4M uses a triangulated 4 link system in the front and rear. That will keep the axles centered and prevent any twisting for a smooth ride. The shocks are oil filled and have adjustable pre-load spacers. A 7.4 volt 750 mAh battery, and charger are included with each TRX-4M. To control this crawler Traxxas has included its TQ 2.4Ghz transmitter. It is a full size 2 channel radio.

Overall, the Traxxas TRX-4M is big fun in a small package. After driving it for a while and getting used to its size and weight. You will try to find more challenging lines to crawl on. If you are an RC crawler enthusiast or someone looking for your 1st crawler. The TRX-4M is definitely a great value at only $149.99 USD at the time I am writing this article. It is becoming one of my go to trucks when I don't feel like packing up a lot of gear. I just grab my green TRX-4M Defender and hit the trail. Fun times ahead.
